Senior Management Team Named for New Smurfit-Stone Container Corp.

Jefferson Smurfit Corp. and Stone Container Corp. have named the senior management team for Smurfit-Stone Container Corp. (SSCC), the new company which resulted from the definitive merger of Jefferson Smurfit and Stone Container announced May 10.

Michael W.J. Smurfit, 62, as announced earlier, will be non-executive chairman, and Roger Stone, 63, will serve as president and chief executive officer of the merged company. The operating units of the company will report to Stone, as will Ray Curran, 52, Smurfit-Stone's executive vice president and deputy chief executive, and Patrick J. Moore, 43, Smurfit-Stone's vice president and chief financial officer.

Upon completion of the merger, Richard W. Graham, president and chief executive officer of JJSC, will join the board of Smurfit-Stone and continue his role on the transition steering team.

Operations

The U.S. operating executives will be as follows:

James D. Duncan, 57, vice president and general manager of a newly formed specialty packaging division, which will include JJSC's existing industrial and consumer packaging businesses. Duncan is currently vice president and general manager of JJSC's industrial packaging division.

Gordon L. Jones, 48, vice president and general manager of containerboard marketing, logistics, and domestic and export sales of containerboard, kraft paper and pulp. He is currently senior vice president and general manager of Stone's container division.

Matthew S. Kaplan, 41, vice president and general manager of Smurfit-Stone's container division. Kaplan is currently senior vice president, North American operations for Stone. The container division of Smurfit-Stone will be by far the largest corrugated container business in the industry and will be organized into two regions, each managed by a senior executive. James P. Davis and William G. Eustice will be the vice presidents in charge of the two container division regions. Davis is currently vice president and general manager of JJSC's container division and consumer packaging division, while Eustice is currently a vice president and regional manager of Stone's container division.

F. Scott Macfarlane, 52, will continue as vice president and general manager of the folding carton and boxboard mill division.

John Riconosciuto, 45, vice president and general manager of Smurfit-Stone's multiwall and specialty bag business.

David C. Stevens, 64, vice president and general manager of Smurfit-Stone's recycling operations. Stevens has been vice president and general manager of JJSC's recycling operation, Smurfit Recycling Company, since 1993.

William N. Wandmacher, 55, vice president and general manager of the company's North American containerboard mill operations.

Stone's international operations will continue to report to Roger Stone: John D. Bence, 66, vice president, European packaging operations; Lorne Parnell, 55, vice president, Pacific operations; Jose A. Santos, 64, vice president, Latin American operations; Allen M. Koleff, 60, vice president of environmental affairs.

The newsprint and market pulp operations, as well as purchasing and planning, will report to Ray Curran. Jay D. Lamb, 50, will continue in his role as vice president and general manager of JJSC's newsprint operations. Thomas A. Pagano, 51, currently vice president, planning for JJSC, will be vice president, planning for the merged company.

Corporate Staff

The corporate staff of Smurfit-Stone will report to Pat Moore: Michael F. Harrington, 58, vice president, employee relations; James A. Hayssen, 43, vice president, information technology; Charles A. Hinrichs, 44, vice president and treasurer; Paul K. Kaufmann, 44, corporate controller of Smurfit- Stone; Timothy McKenna, 50, vice president, investor relations and communications; Thomas G. Pavlini, 47, vice president of distribution; Gayle M. Sparapani, 47, vice president of compensation and benefits; Glen Thornell, 61, director of internal audit.

During July, Jefferson Smurfit Corporation and Stone Container Corp. completed compliance with and received necessary approvals under the antitrust requirements in the United States, the European Union and Canada to proceed with their pending merger.
