RPA-100% Symbol to Appear on all Puffs Products Hitting Stores in Late August

NEW YORK, N.Y., August 2, 1999 – Further demonstrating its environmental citizenship, consumer products giant Procter & Gamble (P&G) is the latest of fifty household-name companies to partner with The 100% Recycled Paperboard Alliance (RPA-100%) in its integrated marketing campaign designed to help consumers close the loop on their recycling activities by "buying recycled." P&G will display the 100% recycled paperboard symbol – with explanations in English and French – on Puffs packages slated to hit store shelves in the U.S. and Canada after August 16, 1999.
"We, at Procter & Gamble, have always been environmentally conscious by ensuring our products, packaging and operations are safe for our employees, consumers and the environment," said Roger Vandersnick, Puffs Brand Manager for Procter & Gamble. "Now, Puffs packaging is using the 100% recycled paperboard symbol, letting consumers know that P&G is committed to conserving natural resources. Also, by displaying the symbol on our packaging, we are letting our customers see that their recycling efforts are paying off," said Vandersnick.

Paul DeNunzio, of Smurfit-Stone Container Corporation and chairman of RPA-100%'s marketing committee, said, "Consumer product companies, such as Procter & Gamble, are joining our campaign because we make their brands look even better. We offer them a unique business proposition to help motivate consumer purchase of their products at retail. And, as an industry, we recognize it takes much more than just education to alter consumer purchasing patterns. Our research shows consumers are looking for 'value-added' benefits from their favorite brands, combined with easy access to these products on retail shelves."

Other RPA-100% partners displaying the 100% recycled paperboard symbol on their products and packaging include Albertson's, Kellogg's, General Mills, Reynolds, Kroger, Nestle, Lever Brothers, Airborne Express, The Dial Corporation, Frito-Lay, First Brands, Eveready Battery, Hormel Foods, Marcal Paper, Purolater, S.C. Johnson (Dowbrands) and Cascade Industries, among others.

Introduced in 1995, the 100% recycled paperboard symbol has become increasingly popular with packaged goods companies and consumers. Recent nationwide opinion surveys demonstrate that 87% would like to see the symbol on products packaged in 100% recycled paperboard.

The 100% Recycled Paperboard Alliance represents approximately two-thirds of the industry – who together turn more than seven million tons of old papers each year into 100% recycled paperboard. Members include: Banner Fibreboard Company; Caraustar Industries, Inc.; Smurfit-Stone Container Corporation; The Newark Group, Inc.; Paperboard Industries International, Inc.; Republic Paperboard Company and Rock-Tenn Company.
