Packaging Advances Emerging from Japan

Several new packaging developments are making headway in Japan, according to a recent report in New Food Products Japan.

Microwave Retort Package
Meiwa Packs has developed its Range Chubo series of microwave retort packages. The series is a continuation of the development of the company's Range de Pon automatic opening microwave cooking bags. The company has taken this same bag and put it through the retort process. The new bag does not need to be closed, and when it is placed in the microwave oven for cooking, the heat of the oven goes through the special seal to pressure-cook the contents. This makes the packaging suitable for cooking frozen foods, as well as foods made with dressings, sauces or soups. Meiwa Packs is distributing samples to companies in the food industry.

Antibacterial Packaging
Daiya Foods, a major egg package maker, has developed antibacterial packaging for eggs. The package is made from a material containing special ceramics, which allows for the entire package, including the insides, to be effectively antibacterial. The container is said to be effective even

Typically, eggs are washed before they are packaged for shipment, however any remaining bacteria can grow during distribution. Daiya's package can prevent the growth of bacteria during the distribution process. Furthermore, other antibacterial solvents have only been effective on bacteria in direct contact with the package, but Daiya's package, consisting of A-PET materials mixed with special ceramics, is able to prevent bacteria even in spots that are not in direct contact. Industry analysts are anticipating the development of other uses for the highly resistant material.

PS Containers for HMR
Another new package, developed in response to the growing home meal replacement (HMR) market segment, comes from FP Co., a major food container manufacturer. The new containers, known as the Mister series, are available in three varieties: the EkuStar, the FineStar and the KuriStar. All three are made from new polystyrene and can accept laminate and coloring. The FineStar is available in transparent, white and white/wood color combinations. The company will be marketing the containers to the supermarkets' HMR industry.
