Lorentz Meats Delivers Premium Quality Through Thermoform Packaging Equipment

Lorentz Meats, a second-generation family owned and operated enterprise that has been in the custom meat industry for 35 years, represents a growing and lucrative niche market of small and medium sized processors and co-packers who specialize in organic and other distinctive products. They provide processing and co-packing support to small regional farmers and other private label businesses, delivering high quality premium meat products to market. Because of the specialized nature of the business, their production levels tend to be low volume, and they often process several different product lines in a single day.

As a specialized meat processor whose emphasis is on quality and not quantity, Lorentz faced a challenge in finding a packaging system that was cost-effective for their lower volumes, yet provided versatility and sophisticated features that would reflect the quality, integrity and aesthetic appeal of their product.

"We produce premium meat products and we needed a system that created packaging reflecting that quality," said Mike Lorentz, president of Lorentz Meats.

Lorentz recently found a solution to meet this challenge by installing a new fully automated thermoform fill and seal rollstock system. The equipment allows Lorentz to create unique and hermetically sealed packaging, tailored to the wide range of product they produce – including ground beef, pork chops, bacon and bratwurst. The model Lorentz chose (a Multivac R230) is a compact TFFS system cost effective for delivering premium quality to lower volume applications.

Introduction to the Ideal Solution
Lorentz was first introduced to thermoform rollstock systems while co-packing ground beef for their customer Organic Valley. Lorentz used a R230 loaned to them by Organic Valley to complete the project.

"It was immediately apparent that thermoform packaging was ideal for highlighting the premium quality of our product," said Lorentz. "It was extremely efficient and created packages that really stand out on store shelves. Also the shapes and sizes we could create seemed limitless, which is important when you have a wide range of products like ours."
