Kraton Polymers Announces New Developments In High Performance Barrier Packaging

Houston, TX - Kraton Polymers LLC polymer producer, recently announced new developments in functionalized hydrogenated styrenic block copolymers for use as tie layers in high performance barrier packaging applications.
"Kraton is committed to bringing innovations to the packaging and films market," said Kevin M. Fogarty, executive vice president of Kraton. "These new developments are just one example of how we are reaffirming our position as the market leader. Through a sustained research and development program, we continue to deliver customized solutions that target the needs of the flexible packaging industry." "Food manufacturers are continually looking for ways to extend the life of their products and cut down manufacturing costs," said Fogarty. "With Kraton's focus on new tie layer technology, we believe they will now be able to produce stronger, more cost-efficient packaging solutions."
It is believed to be this new tie layer technology specifically targets high performance barrier packaging, such as stand up pouches and/or clear retortable packaging, and brings new capabilities to the industry while providing more efficient processing methods. The company further stated that the Tie layers are used by packaging manufacturers in coextrusions to bond dissimilar materials together, such as barrier materials (Nylon, EVOH) and seal materials (polyolefins), to create the strength and flexibility needed for various barrier packaging applications.
Also, newly developed grades within the Kraton® G polymer product line provide significant improvement in clarity and puncture resistance of film structures as well as enhanced heat resistance when compared to conventional tie layer materials, according to the company. This new packaging option provides manufacturers with reduced costs and increased savings along the entire value chain by reducing waste and transportation costs, and by increasing the recyclability of scraps adds the company.
