Innovative Packaging Solutions Pave The Way For A More Sustainable Food Industry

IPG's sustainable packaging solutions are keeping food fresh and the planet healthy

Sarasota, FL (PRWEB) - Today’s food industry relies on years of packaging innovation to keep food fresh from farm to fork. From plastic containers to bags and wraps, food products need protective packaging to prevent contamination and maintain quality across their supply chain. But all that convenience comes at a cost: almost 23% of all waste in the US is from food packaging and containers, making it one of the largest contributors to our landfills.

To provide more sustainable solutions, leaders in the packaging industry are putting forward new products that generate less waste. For example, Intertape Polymer Group (IPG), one of the industry’s largest and most sustainable companies, is pushing the boundaries of what’s possible for a more environmentally-conscious industry with eco-friendly solutions for tape, stretch film, shrink film, carton sealing equipment, and cold-chain storage.

One of IPG's standout innovations is their polyolefin shrink film and shrink wrap line, which is certified under the Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI) for product protection in applications requiring direct food contact. These Exlfilm® and Exlfilmplus® brand shrink films are thin yet durable, meaning less product is needed to package food products, generating less waste in the process.

Keeping products like produce, meats, and dairy fresh means shipping and transporting them in cold storage. But did you know that most cold-chain packaging products are made with toxic single-use materials? IPG's newest innovation in cold-chain packaging is the Chill-R® curbside recyclable and paper-based insulation material. It offers a sustainable solution to food transportation and is a two-piece paper-based product laminated with "direct food contact" paper, providing soft cushioning on the inside for ample protection during transit.

Another major contributor to packaging waste is plastic-based tape, which is why IPG developed a range of water-activated tapes (WAT) that provide maximum strength and durability. IPG's water-activated tapes are made out of paper and are recyclable along with the cardboard box on which they are applied. These tapes offer a secure bond to multiple surfaces and materials, are all-weather proof, ensure protection, and can be custom made to fit any brand's corporate message.

"At IPG, sustainability is more than just a buzzword - it's a guiding principle that influences every aspect of our business," says Jay Bolus, VP of Sustainability for IPG. “We firmly believe that sustainable packaging is not only good for the planet, but also good for business, and we are dedicated to leading the charge towards a more sustainable future for the food industry."

As the food industry continues to grow, packaging will have an even greater impact on the environment. Fortunately, companies like IPG are taking important steps to creating more sustainable packaging solutions. IPG is reducing waste and making the industry more eco-friendly without compromising on quality or safety. With the help of industry leaders like IPG, we can create a more sustainable future for the food industry and our planet.
