HDPE Bottles Feature Cutting-Edge Design, Inline Fluorination

Airopak Corp. (Manchester, PA) and Marpac Industries (Kingston, NY) teamed up at EastPack in Philadelphia to display three custom-designed, inline fluorinated high-density polyethylene (HDPE) containers for industrial/chemical, automotive aftermarket and consumer products.

The application-specific containers each demonstrate the versatility of the firms to provide distinct containers that can be inline fluorinated to contain highly solvent mixtures to provide durable and cost-effective barrier properties. The companies, which are part of the PVC Container Corp. umbrella of companies, design, manufacture and supply custom and stock blow-molded plastic bottles and containers.

The first container, developed jointly by the two companies, is for Rescue emergency fuel additive from Pennzoil-Quaker State. Designed and produced in a matter of weeks, the Rescue bottle incorporates special angles that are difficult to blow-mold. In addition, the package incorporates a unique snap-on spout which, when screwed onto the cap threads, is extremely hard to remove. The container is fully lined with the fluorination process to safely hold and protect the fuel additive mixture.

The other two products highlighted at EastPack are pseudo consumer and industrial products, with the containers each having special design elements and blow-molding constraints designed into them. The brilliantly colored orange container, used by a leading manufacturer of hand cleaners, incorporates a unique series of indents designed to store and hold a cleaning scrub brush.

Requirements for this hand-cleaning product container in one- and two-gallon sizes demanded by the customer included blow-molding-in special indents that would allow an injection-molded polymer scrub brush to stay firmly attached during filling and labeling operations as well as shipment and display. This container is also fluorinated inline.

The third container at the Airopak/Marpac booth was for a floor-cleaning product that not only required inline fluorination but also an upgraded, upscaled shelf-appeal. The bottle includes a rich, silver color, special small indents all around the bottle and a highly unique indentation that is used by the consumer as a second handle at the base of the container to enable users to use both hands for pouring the contents. This bottle also features a four-finger grip handle, which allows users to use both hands fully to pour and use the product. Finally, the bottle has a designed-in no-dribble neck.
