The activities of Buhrs-Zaandam BV go back to 1908, when Mr. Dorus Buhrs founded his company in Zaandam, the Netherlands. In 1950, the company began to specialize in paperwrapping machines for graphical products under the brand name "Zaandam". In 1973, the stock exchange listed Bührmann Tetterode NV acquired Buhrs-Zaandam in order to further expand into the business of the production of machines for single copy mailing of graphical products.

With the acquisition of Buhrs-Zaandam BV by the investment company Convent Holdings BV of Rotterdam in 1993, the foundation of the Buhrs Group was laid. Under the wings of Buhrs Holding BV of Rotterdam, sales and technical service companies were established in Minneapolis (USA), Paris (France) and Yokohama (Japan) in 1994.

In order to expand into the segment of the production of envelope inserting systems, Buhrs Holding acquired the company ITM-Thies & Co of Bielefeld (Germany) in 1995, which was renamed Buhrs-ITM GmbH. In 1996, they moved to new facilities in Löhne.

To enter into the segment of the development, production and sales of commissioning and return systems for press wholesalers, Buhrs Holding acquired Media Craft AS in Kongsberg (Norway) in 1996, with subsidiaries MC Media Craft UK in London (UK) and MC Media Craft GmbH in Frankfurt (Germany). These companies were renamed Buhrs-Media Craft. In 1997, Buhrs-Media Craft GmbH relocated to Löhne and integrated with Buhrs-ITM, resulting in one organisation for Germany: Buhrs-ITM GmbH.

With more than 50 years of experience and over 2,500 installed systems, the Buhrs Group has become world leader in development, production and sales of systems preparing printed media for distribution.
