Bemis EZ Peel Reseal Package Wins Top Honors For Consumer Convenience In UK Packaging Awards 2009

New Asda Extra Special semi rigid packages with Bemis EZ Peel Reseal technology open smoothly and close reliably with fingertip pressure. As one UK Packaging Awards judge put it, "It's about time someone nailed this one."

Neenah, WI - A Bemis EZ Peel Reseal package, a recent technology developed in North American that is achieving global acclaim, garnered top honors for consumer convenience at this year's UK Packaging Awards. Produced by Parkam Foods for Asda Stores, the easy-open/resealable package allows consumers purchasing Asda Extra Special cooked meats to enjoy the convenience of reclosing the peelable package lid, and feeling confident it will stay closed.

New Asda Extra Special tray & lid packages with Bemis EZ Peel Reseal technology Judges at the UK Packaging Awards 2009 gave the Asda Extra Special package, produced by Parkam Foods for Asda Stores and featuring Bemis EZ Peel Reseal technology, top honors for consumer convenience. The rigid tray and peelable lid package exposes a pressure sensitive layer when the consumer opens the package. A simple touch of the finger recloses the package to protect the remaining servings.

The semi rigid package system features Bemis EZ Peel Reseal film, an advanced peelable technology that exposes a pressure sensitive layer when the consumer opens the package. The easy-opening action of the lidstock leaves a smooth surface for the adhesive to adhere to upon closing to keep the meats fresher, longer. In addition, robust construction of the lidding film ensures the lid lays flat upon reclose, with an improved adhesive layer that provides strong, consistent tack over multiple uses. A simple touch of the finger recloses the package to protect the remaining servings.

The award-winning package consists of printable, high-barrier EZ Peel Reseal lidstock hermetically sealed to opaque PET formed rollstock. The system maintains complete seal integrity around the perimeter of package, eliminating material weakening or oxygen or moisture ingress caused by die-cut or scoring used in other peel/reseal systems. EZ-Peel Reseal packaging is ideal for multi-serving foods like sliced meats and cheeses, as well as for multi-packs of consumer goods like razors and batteries.

"Consumers love EZ Peel Reseal packages because they're easy and convenient to use," says Warren Birch, Bemis Europe's General Sales Manager for the UK and Ireland. "Users simply open the package and set it out with the meal, then reclose the package and store it until the next meal. The package is good for marketers too-every time the consumer goes to get another serving out of that package, it reinforces the choice to buy that brand."

The EZ Peel Reseal system also helps marketers differentiate their brands on shelf. Bemis's proprietary coextrusion and coating processes create a lidding film with sparkling optics and maximum clarity to showcase product quality. Lidstock is printable in up to 10 colors to create an outstanding billboard effect. A proprietary anti-fog technology manages packaging condensation. The rigid, puncture-resistant packages are strong enough to maintain their signature shape when merchandised in spring-loaded racks, creating a high-impact front facing to the consumer. In addition, the "right-sized" packages ensure trays are not over- or under-filled, so the product does not shift during handling and distribution. The rigid PET tray material is available as rollstock or pre-made trays, in clear, pigmented or custom colors to create a unique brand look.

The EZ Peel Reseal system reduces materials 54% compared to tub and lid systems that require secondary barrier packaging and labeling to protect and market the contents. The tray material is available with up to 40% post-consumer recycled content.

With the EZ Peel Reseal system, proprietary sealant layers in the tray and lid create a strong hermetic seal while allowing custom-tailored peel initiation for easy opening. The film's peelability and resealability are independent of seal temperature, pressure or dwell time, allowing faster line speeds and fewer rejects. EZ Peel Reseal films can be run on existing equipment, typically without any machine modifications.

The EZ Peel Reseal packaging system is available through Bemis Europe, based in Soignies, Belgium, as well as Bemis's Curwood Division, based in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, USA. Bemis Company is a major supplier of flexible packaging and pressure sensitive materials used by leading food, consumer products, manufacturing and other companies worldwide.
