Volumetric cup fillers are the oldest and simplest way of filling free-flow products
Volumetric cup fillers are the oldest and simplest way of filling free-flow products. Products dispensed using a Spee-Dee include rice, popcorn, granulated sugar, beans, nuts, coffee, kitty litter, etc. The products must be dry, free flowing, and have a relatively consistent density.

The method of operation is very simple. A set of measuring cups is rotated beneath a fill hopper and the cup is filled. As rotation continues, a hopper brush levels off the measuring cup. Rotation continues until the measuring cup is over the discharge hole, and the product is dispensed via gravity. The sizing of the cups is based upon the volume required to fill a specified weight. The density of the product is used to calculate the required volume for each fill size and the cup is sized accordingly. Telescoping cups are used to make minor adjustments required for changes in density.

Cup sizes may range from 1" in diameter to 6" in diameter and can be as long as 25", depending upon the model. This range can accommodate volumes from 0.5 cubic inch to 700 cubic inches for different package sizes. Speeds up to 160 fills per minute are capable on some models. Speed depends a great deal on the product and package size.

Various models are available to handle requirements ranging from a simple hand fill to interfacing with automatic equipment such as vertical form, fill, seal machines and automatic conveyors. Multiple drop units are also available.
