A-B invests in glass bottle plant in Texas

Longhorn Glass Corporation (Jacinto City, TX), an Anheuser-Busch subsidiary, has entered the first phase of hiring for its renovated glass bottle plant. Longhorn Glass reportedly is the first glass plant opened in the United States since the early 1980s.

Scheduled to open this summer, the plant is expected to create approximately 150 jobs.

Upon completion, Longhorn Glass will produce long-neck, amber glass bottles for the nearby Anheuser-Busch, Inc. Houston brewery. Anheuser-Busch, Inc. is the nation's largest buyer of glass bottles.

Beginning in mid-January, Longhorn will hire thirty-five hourly employees to assist with installation of new equipment, which is part of the $80 million renovation of the former Anchor Glass Plant, closed nearly four years ago. Additional phases of the hiring will continue later this year, as the glass plant gets closer to beginning full-scale production.

"Since we first opened the brewery in Houston in 1966, we have been committed to the Houston area," said Joseph Goltzman, vp, Anheuser-Busch Companies. "This added investment in the Longhorn Glass facility further strengthens our commitment to this city."

Goltzman said government officials worked to develop a package of inducements, which included tax abatements among other forms of assistance.

Anheuser-Busch operations in Houston currently employ almost 1,000 people with a payroll totaling close to $80 million. In addition, nine independent Anheuser-Busch wholesalers in the Houston area employ more than 700 people.

Anheuser-Busch Companies, Inc. is a diversified international corporation with interests in beer, packaging and family entertainment. Its subsidiaries include Anheuser-Busch, Inc., the world's largest brewer, whose products include Budweiser and Bud Light, the two largest-selling beer brands in the world. Other subsidiaries include Metal Container Corporation, one of the nation's largest aluminum container manufacturers and Busch Entertainment Corporation, which operates 9 theme parks in the U.S. Other subsidiary business interests range from creative services to railcar repair and transportation.
