Determination Of Moisture Content In Corn Masa

Source: Thermo Scientific Product Inspection

The e scan system was installed in the customers masa line, after the masa hog and prior to the sheeter. Over 30 samples of corn masa were taken from the line near the e scan in a range of 47% to 52% moisture by weight. Primary measurements were made and the data used to complete the e scan calibration. After calibration was complete, valdation was performed with an additional 10 samples in a range of 50 to 53% moisture by weight. Product was sampled during normal production flow and process conditions. In comparing the results of the validation to the calbration we fond the results were consistent. After two months of production operation, a second validation of 34 samples was made with improved results found. Improved results in the scond validation are attributed to a lager sample set.

The e scan guided microwave spectrometer is comprised of a) a 4-inch diameter measurement chamber connected to b) a microwave synthesizer via c) two probes and d) a temperature probe attached to the chamber body. The e) HMI is connected to the synthesizer and used for calibration and display of results. There are no moving parts. The chamber body and probes are rated 3A sanitary and IP-69K water/dust ingress, and 500 lbs. pressure (ANSI tested to 750 psig).
